For Hushy Rawrdcore
You fixed me. You helped me reach my dreams. And now, I dedicate a book to you about doing the thing you love
Miu
Miu had been inspired by different artists and had always wanted to make music. Now she was trying to. She turned in her car and drove over to the nearest store she knew had the cheapest instruments. At the time, she was only about 17 and didn’t have much money. That gave her a tough time, but the employees here were super nice, and they had the cheapest stuff that she knew of.
Miu wasn’t so sure what she wanted. A keyboard would be cool, drums and guitar were necessary for the type of music she wanted to make... Suddenly, she heard someone behind her. “Hey, Miu! I know it’s a little hard to choose... You know what, we’re besties so I’ll give you...” They paused. “20 to 50 precent off of what you want?”
Miu nodded. “That sounds all good. Thanks, Kai!” She picked out what she wanted, some people helping her get the best deals and the least run-down and cheap sounding. She went to pay, which the total came to 100-200 dollars, which is way less for an electric keyboard, a decent quality guitar, and a drum set that was probably used before and needed to be assembled again.
She went home and assembled everything before plugging in the amp and the guitar to the amp. What am I going to do right now? It's not like I’m going to start right this second... She thought while staring down at the cords which were already a tangled mess for no reason at all. She sighed and sat down in her computer chair, where she signed up for a starting lesson for music. She waited and waited for what seemed like hours, until a notification for teams showed up on her computer.
She pressed join call before sitting down. “Hello everyone, welcome to my lesson. My name is Kami, and here we will be learning the starting basics of music. I expect you all to have at least one instrument, right?” In fact, I do. Thought Miu before she backed away from the screen to make her keyboard, drums and guitar visible.
“Wow Miu, you have quite the setup!” Kami complemented. Miu gave a small nod of thanks before almost tripping back into her seat. “Now, let's get to using those instruments. Everyone, go over to your drums if you have them. They were the easiest to learn to me.”
Miu went over to the back of the room where the drums were and sat down on the stool. “Let's learn a simple beat. First, we’ll need to learn all the types of drums. You see that wide, kind of tall one? That's the snare. Hit it, see what sound it makes.” Miu whacked it with one of her drumsticks, it made the sound you would expect from a drum. Not surprising.
I can't remember any of these names, for the life of me. thought Kami, staring down Miu’s drum trying to figure out what to say next. “That big drum by your feet, tall with the pedal, is called a ‘bass drum’.” Kami explained, Miu stepped on the pedal, and it made a deeper, stronger sound than the snare they had just heard.
Kami continued “The 2 golden cymbal looking ones on the side are called the ‘crash cymbal’ and the one closest to you is the ‘hi-hat cymbal’. The one on the other side is the ‘ride cymbal’. Right below the ride cymbal is the ‘floor drum’. and the 2 furthest from you are the ‘tom drums’.” Miu nodded, testing each one and quickly realizing how to put the sound together to make a simple beat.
“You’re on a roll, Miu. You must be a fast learner!” Kami inferred. Miu thought I’m not, that was just luck. I can dream, but I’ve never had the mental capacity to make music. Let alone learn. As if Kami had read her mind, she said “Miu, I see that look in your eyes. Please, believe in yourself.” Miu nodded but didn’t know if it was for sure.
“That’s all for today, make sure to practice!” Kami said before hanging up. Miu got up from her stool and shuffled away slowly. She inhaled. I’m not even sure if this is my thing, I mean just because I can learn a beat doesn’t mean I can make a song. After holding her breath, she exhaled.
