It was a bright, sunny greenleaf day when the leader, Soulstar, woke up. A black cat ran over. “Soulstar! You’re finally awake, if only you let us know you were taking a nap while the gathering was happening. We spent all night – and dawn – trying to find you!” the cat said.
Soulstar perked his ears up, almost dismissively. “Well, I need my sleep. I’m about elder age and I need my sleep so I can get around and make announcements.” His tail lightly brushed the ground; he stared the black cat in the eyes.
“That is no excuse! You’ve been a leader for a long time and should know that the gathering is very important, I might as well be the leader if you can't even attend a gathering because of your ‘frail’ bones. You’re still warrior age!” The cat yelped in one breath. They seemed to be getting increasingly impatient.
“Oh, Redfang, always making a big deal out of things. You could have continued without me. If you want to be leader so bad, why don’t you make an announcement to the clan?” Soulstar asked. Redfang turned around to look at the high rock. She looked back at Soulstar.
“Maybe I will.”
“Go on,” Soulstar replied. “Make your announcement.”
Redfang hopped up onto the high rock, taking in a breath. “All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather around the high rock for a clan meeting.” As cats gathered, he went on, “Soulstar forgot to announce this, maybe because he doesn’t ever care but... Dustclaw is dead.”
Cries rang out from the crowd, some in grief and some against Soulstar. Soulstar looked around unsurely, seeing all the outraged cats. “You never told us! He was your deputy, our deputy!” a voice called from the mob of angry cats. Soulstar realized he was a bad, bad leader. He would make it up to everyone, right?
“I forgot to say anything about it, I-I didn’t know!” Soulstar pleaded. The cat that called out walked forward.
“You’re saying two different things, Soulstar. You’re lying, aren’t I correct?” Soulstar shook his head. “I swear on every spirit in StarClan, I did forget!” He continued “This is truly disappointing, Limewing. Talking to your leader like this?”
Limewing interjected “Well, it seems like Redfang’s the leader now since you decided she was good enough.”
